I’ve experienced my share of life-altering events – from watching my house burn down to the dissolution of my twenty-six-year marriage. These events forced me to confront the essence of accountability in my life. It wasn’t merely about understanding what happened or measuring the extent of my losses. It was about taking ownership of my future, making informed choices, and acting upon them to redefine my life.
Awareness vs. Action: The Fundamental Divide
There’s a common misconception that awareness of a problem is akin to solving it. But here’s the truth: awareness is only the first step. Authentic accountability lies in the actions we take following that awareness. Consider environmental degradation: many of us know how our habits contribute to this global issue. However, only a few take the decisive step to modify those habits towards sustainability. That leap from knowing to doing, from being informed to taking responsibility, is what accountability is all about.
The Role of Choice in Accountability
Accountability starts with a choice. In the aftermath of my tragedies, I was faced with a choice: to remain stuck in the narrative of loss or to use my experiences to rebuild a life aligned with my values and aspirations. This is where accountability transcends mere measurement. It’s about using data and experiences not as crutches but as stepping stones to make informed, ethical decisions that propel us forward.
Facing the Consequences of Inaction
Failing to act on our awareness can lead to dire consequences. The lack of accountability in business, healthcare, and environmental conservation has led to failures beyond individual repercussions, affecting entire communities and ecosystems. These aren’t just cautionary tales; they’re real-life repercussions of inaction, underscoring the need to shift from passive awareness to active accountability.

Decoys are the smokescreens we put up to avoid proper accountability. These include gossiping, blaming others, and engaging in apathy, all of which serve to deflect responsibility. The underlying motive is often to preserve self-image or avoid adverse consequences, leading to stagnant personal growth and eroded trust in relationships.
Shortcuts represent the minimal effort solutions people adopt to skirt around genuine accountability. They manifest as excuses, cheating, or bargaining—essentially any behavior that aims to achieve results with the least effort or confrontation. While they may offer temporary ease or escape, shortcuts ultimately compromise integrity, quality, and the potential for real success.
Shenanigans, in the context of personal accountability and behavior, refer to a range of underhanded, deceitful, or mischievous actions individuals may engage in to avoid genuine responsibility or to gain an unfair advantage. These behaviors are often driven by self-interest, laziness, or the desire to manipulate situations or outcomes without putting in the necessary effort or adhering to ethical standards. Shenanigans can include trickery, dishonesty, playing pranks, or engaging in manipulative tactics that undermine trust, disrupt cooperation, and hinder collective progress. While they might provide short-term gains or amusement, shenanigans ultimately damage relationships, erode personal integrity, and impede long-term success and growth. They represent a significant barrier to living a life of true accountability, integrity, and fulfillment.
Individuals should aim for authenticity, transparency, and integrity to avoid decoys and shortcuts. This involves embracing honesty, confronting challenges directly, and engaging in constructive, ethical behaviors. Transitioning from deceit to genuineness requires a profound reevaluation of one’s values and a commitment to personal growth and responsibility.
Intentions set the foundation for accountable living. They are about adopting a mindset of transparency, understanding, and genuine effort. Intentions drive us to act with integrity and purpose, fostering personal and collective growth.
Commitments are our promises to ourselves and others, reflecting our values and integrity. They involve facing challenges, supporting others, and contributing positively to our communities. Commitments strengthen our resolve to live by our beliefs and achieve our goals, reinforcing accountability and ethical behavior.
Discoveries are the insights and growth we gain through living intentionally and committedly. They represent the evolution of our understanding, abilities, and relationships as we align more closely with our true selves and potential.
In this context, Shenanigans refer to the various tricks and deceitful behaviors employed to avoid true accountability. To counteract shenanigans, individuals should cultivate sincerity, rationality, and kindness to replace selfish motives and frivolous actions with constructive, honest, and responsible behaviors.
Achieve balance between personal desires and external expectations by understanding and adhering to one’s core values and beliefs while being open to growth and change. It involves distinguishing between genuine needs and superficial wants and between constructive criticism and baseless judgment.
To live a fulfilled life based on accountability and responsibility, it is crucial to develop cognitive, emotional, and physical agility and intellectual humility. This enables individuals to navigate the complexities of life, make informed decisions, and take meaningful actions aligned with their deepest values and goals. By recognizing and overcoming decoys, shortcuts, and shenanigans and fostering intentions, commitments, and discoveries, individuals can live more authentically, contributing positively to their lives and those around them.
In the grand symphony of life, our journey often reaches a crescendo, punctuated by the consequences of choices made long ago. It’s a slow simmer of suffering that emanates from a decision we might not even realize we made – the choice to relinquish our freedom and lay the blame for our outcomes at someone else’s feet.
Picture this: You wake up one morning, the sun’s rays painting a canvas of possibilities, and yet, instead of embracing your potential and self-agency, you choose a different path. Who among us intentionally declares, “I want to perform at a sub-par level and sustain a state of mediocrity today?” None of us do, and yet, it’s a path many unwittingly tread.
Our lives become marred by negativity, blame, and excuses. We lament the unfinished chores from yesterday, the extra weight we carry, our stiff joints, and the missed opportunities that have slipped through our fingers. As we scroll through our email, we roll our eyes at the overly zealous messages from someone suffering from insomnia, little realizing that we, too, are ensnared in a different kind of sleepwalking.
The Tale of Sarah: A Life Unfulfilled
Let me introduce you to Sarah, a woman who personified the unraveling of her life’s potential. Sarah was once a dreamer, her eyes glistening with ambition. She had goals, aspirations, and a fire in her belly. But as time went on, she allowed the weight of responsibilities and societal expectations to smother her dreams. She tossed the towel into the ring, surrendering her self-agency, believing that life’s disappointments were the fault of others.
Sarah woke up one day, no longer recognizing the reflection in the mirror. She had succumbed to mediocrity, content with the status quo. Her dreams had faded into the background, replaced by a litany of excuses and a penchant for blaming everyone but herself. The slow simmer of suffering had taken hold, and Sarah was trapped in a life less than desirable.
The Parable of the Unfinished Masterpiece
Imagine an artist who starts a masterpiece but never completes it. Each stroke of the brush holds the promise of greatness, but they continually put the canvas aside, blaming external distractions and circumstances for their unfinished work. The masterpiece remains hidden beneath layers of dust and regret, a symbol of untapped potential and unfulfilled dreams.
In the same way, we often leave our own life’s masterpiece unfinished, blaming the world for our incomplete journey. We forget that our choices, actions, and mindset determine the final strokes on the canvas of our existence.
Breaking the Chains
Breaking free from this cycle of mediocrity requires awareness and a shift in perspective. It’s about realizing that we are the architects of our lives, not passive bystanders. We must acknowledge our power to choose differently, to embrace self-agency, and to take responsibility for our own consequences.
It’s time to stop feasting on negativity, blame, and excuses. Instead, let’s savor the taste of self-determination and the sweet rewards of personal accountability. Our lives are too precious to be wasted on a path of mediocrity.
So, as the sun rises on a new day, ask yourself, “Do I want to be the artist of my masterpiece or merely a spectator in someone else’s gallery?” The choice is yours, and it’s a choice that can unravel the symphony of mediocrity, allowing the crescendo of your potential to soar.

In the depths of personal struggle, I sat on the curb, tears streaming down my face. The pain of losing my marriage and home to a fire weighed heavily on my heart. To make matters worse, I was stuck in a mediocre job to make ends meet. But amidst the chaos, one thing kept me going: running.
Running was not merely a physical activity for me; it became a pathway to self-discovery and personal growth. It taught me the value of hard work, dedication, and self-discipline. So when my husband abruptly ended our 26-year marriage, leaving me to pick up the pieces, I was devastated. The shame of a failed marriage consumed me, and reaching out to others for help proved futile. However, I found solace in the experiences of friends who had also gone through similar heartbreak, realizing that I was not alone in this journey.
While training for my ninth Chicago marathon, I experienced a moment of profound grief, shame, and helplessness. Collapsing on the curb, I allowed myself to embrace the pain entirely. At this moment, I realized that some of life’s greatest gifts come from our moments of suffering.
Summoning my inner strength, I vowed: “This is my life, problems, and responsibility to figure out.” Taking personal accountability has always been a fundamental principle in my life. From selling calendars door-to-door as a child to forming a cheerleading squad in fourth grade, I have always strived to create opportunities.
Throughout my journey, I encountered both triumphs and setbacks. I started my own aerobic business, faced bankruptcy, and returned to school to fulfill my lifelong dream of earning a doctorate. Along the way, I had the privilege of meeting influential figures like Jack Lalanne and Norman Vincent Peale, who inspired me with their resilience and wisdom.
2005 my divorce was finalized, marking a significant turning point in my life. Tentatively, I ventured into online dating, stepping outside the comfort of a long-term marriage. Through my own experiences and the stories of others, I realized that we all carry burdens and endure hardships in different ways.
The underlying message of my meandering journey is clear: personal accountability is the foundation upon which we build our lives. It is not about seeking rewards or punishments but about being true to ourselves and our beliefs. When we fall short of our goals, we must examine why and learn from our shortcomings. Accountability extends beyond individual actions; it influences how we treat others, the example we set for our loved ones, and the choices we make in life.
Today, I invite you to join me in reclaiming agency and redefining accountability. Let us break free from outdated notions of power, command and control, punishment, and reward. Let us embrace responsibility as a personal journey of growth, love, and care—for ourselves and others. As we navigate the complexities of life, let personal accountability guide our actions and bring meaning and purpose to our existence.

### The Super Hero Conundrum: Repurposing the Cape
Let’s talk about superheroes. Not the ones in comic books or blockbuster movies, but the kind we become when life gets overwhelming, expectations pile up, and accountability feels too much to bear. The cape comes out, and suddenly, we’re faster, stronger, and more capable than anyone else in the room. It feels empowering—even necessary—to embody the persona of someone who has it all figured out. Yet, beneath that cape often lies a different story: a person grappling with accountability lapses and the weight of unmet goals and dreams.
I’ll admit it—I’ve worn the cape many times. It’s comforting because it overshadows the moments when I’ve fallen short. Instead of facing those uncomfortable truths, I’ve leaned into the illusion of being invincible, masking my missteps with impressive but ultimately superficial displays of competence. This is the Super Hero Conundrum: knowing what to do but making decisions that steer us toward consequences we’d rather avoid and then cloaking ourselves in pretense to maintain the image.
The problem isn’t just the cape—it’s the mindset that keeps us reaching for it. When we rely on impression management—trying to look the part without truly doing the work—we’re not just fooling others. We’re fooling ourselves. Accountability becomes a shadow cast by our larger-than-life facade, and we lose the opportunity to embrace the growth and transformation that true accountability demands.
But what if we could approach life differently? What if we repurposed it as a symbol of strength grounded in humility and authenticity instead of wearing the cape to hide? This shift requires transcending responsibility and embracing person-centered accountability. It’s about owning our choices, understanding their impact, and moving forward with intention and integrity.
This isn’t easy. It requires courage to take off the cape, to acknowledge where we’ve fallen short, and to commit to doing the work. But the rewards are profound. By stepping out of the superhero persona, we reconnect with our humanity and unlock the potential for genuine growth.

True heroism isn’t about looking invincible; it’s about becoming unstoppable in your pursuit of authenticity, purpose, and possibility.

I am under the influence of a millennial. Before you jump to a quick conclusion and question my judgment, let me tell you about the three traits representative of millennials that Jen, my mentor, and friend brings to our relationship.
Being under the influence of a millennial I see things with fresh eyes because of her unrelenting curiosity. She loves to ask what I am waiting for and why I hold back on my dreams. Her attitude is to take a leap of faith. My reaction is fear. Jen nudges me along to overcome my fears and live into my vision. As I sort out my fears, doubts, and worries I am gaining confidence and letting go of the mythical tales of my past.
I recall my sister saying, “You don’t understand until you do.”
Letting go is not forgetting. It is turning memories inside-out to find the hidden lessons. It is in honoring my past that I am learning to move on. I imagine myself reaching out to touch my mom’s hand or looking into my brother’s eyes. I try to see their actions as gifts to help me understand why things happened as they did.
Millennials see different perspectives on career and personal goals and Jen demands the same from me. Her expectations influenced me to claim myself as a ‘Millennial in a Baby Boomer’s Body’ as my TikTok handle. To get me to act on my ideas, she questions me about my true commitment to building my next career. I am continually amazed with the interesting perspectives that come up in these conversations.
Finding new insights is like searching for a missing item in a junk drawer. I am sure you can relate to the frustration we feel while looking for a lost item. Consider the amount of energy you waste only to discover the item in plain sight. The same thing happens when I change perspectives. Recently, I surfaced my inner courage and began to step out of my comfort zone.
Because collaboration and connection are more important to millennials over the solo focus of individual work, they know how to do the following well: 1) Thrive in both virtual and in-person work environments by using technology and social media to energize collaborative efforts and person-to-person connections. 2) Create a lasting impact through the stories and experiences by capturing and sharing videos and photos.
As a self-conscious baby boomer, I squirm each time Jen suggests I share my ideas by recording another TikTok or hosting a live-stream event. These days I seem to be getting more use out of my makeshift home recording studio as Jen cajoles and encourages me. I am continuing to learn, grow, and change beyond getting in front of a camera, which is the real beauty of working with a reverse mentor.
There you have it…I am fortunate to be under the influence of a millennial. Reviving my youthful exuberance from my entrepreneurial days is a great boost to my confidence, health, and well-being. The benefits for Jen as the mentor are noteworthy. She has mastered the art of reverse mentoring through practical learning experiences by taking advantage of the three traits representative of millennials.

The universal journey of change held firmly by the infinity ocean of life never falters. The multiplicity of possibilities and do-overs drone on and on been there, done that, just give me the damn t-shirt.
And so goes the tug-and-pull or give-and-take of the circular chaos of change.
My mind, silenced into the darkness of the briny deep’s uncertainty, held hostage trapped in the sea knave’s den. I must wait for the all-clear to resume living and being.
And so goes the tug-and-pull or give-and-take of the unyielding life of change.
No denying the harsh lessons tattooed by the crashing waves, my continued existence held in the palm of the outreached hands of persistence, my weaknesses come to be my strengths.
And so goes the tug-and-pull or give-and-take of the predicted world of change.
A glinting beacon of light breaks through the thinking surface and goads me into action. I bring back my resolve with the punch of my fist and push off toward the surface rising, gasping for air – lost as the sites unfamiliar deceive my hope and confuse my soul.
And so goes the tug-and-pull or give-and-take of the unsteady turmoil of change.
Treading the ocean’s heartstrings, imagining a better future. No longer contained or constrained, a convert emerges. I stretch out my arms and embrace the new world order.
And so goes the tug-and-pull or give-and-take of the rhythmic dance of change.

It all Started in 1967
The day finally arrived. With 25 cents in my hand, I was ready for my first POS purchase. I carefully selected “Slimming with Yoga”, a Dell Purse book. I didn’t know anything about yoga, but I liked the yellow leotard and the model’s happy face. Little did I know, I started the path to my fitness career that day.
At home, I studied the pictures and followed the instructions carefully. I fell in love with learning about fitness and health. When the opportunity to create an “Our Own Troop’s Badge” for my Girl Scout troop, I chose fitness. You had to demonstrate the ability to do 50 jumping jacks, 50 sit-ups, 50 push-ups, touch your toes, and prepare a healthy meal.
Over time, my collection of Dell Purse books grew to eight. Fortunately, I kept the books in a safe container, and they survived a flood and later a fire. Symbolic in nature, I am happy to have these books as a reminder that I am responsible for my health and wellbeing.
Pathway for 2021
As we go into another New Year, another opportunity to succeed and flourish lays before us. Instead of Dell Purse books, we have Peloton and other options to get healthy and fit. The simplicity of Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan makes it clear what you need to do.
Yet here we are today. Obesity continues to climb. Less than 5% of adults exercise for 30 minutes each day. The typical American diet exceeds recommended intake levels. The consequences are widespread and trending in the wrong direction. Is this the legacy we want to leave?
Years ago, I met the fitness legend, Jack Lalanne and his wife Elaine Lalanne at a fitness conference. He told me it is not that hard to live a healthy lifestyle, it just has to be an absolute priority. No matter what time he went to bed the day before, he remained committed to a 4:30am ritual of exercise and healthy eating to set the day off right.
The problem we are solving is not because we don’t know what to do. We are not unintelligent or indifferent. Too often we turn to the ready-made excuses of it’s my genetics, my big bones, my employer, or the fast-food empire down the street that caused the problem. Long ago we gave up our freedom to choose – actually, we gave up our desire to choose.
There is hope…if you are willing. We must begin with a strong feeling of wanting something, a state of mind, or a craving for something better. Each day we choose our path. We are rich in potential and the possibilities are endless. As Neil Gaiman reminds us, “You’re alive…that means you have infinite potential.”
